Spring into Hosting: Your Guide to Hosting Easter Like a Pro

Easter carries a special kind of magic—a mix of pastel bonnets, chocolate bunnies, and the joy of Easter egg hunts- bringing out the kid in all of us. Every year, I look forward to spring, when I can throw open the windows, arrange vibrant market flowers in my dining room, and welcome loved ones for a celebration.

Here are some of my favorite Easter tips to create an unforgettable brunch or dinner for your family and friends.

Getting Started: The Game Plan

Decide what kind of gathering you want—a relaxed brunch, an elegant dinner, or something in the middle. This will influence everything from the menu to the table setting.

Consider your guest list - not just numbers but also dietary preferences and seating arrangements. Create a timeline that allows you to prepare, ensuring you can be present and composed when guests arrive. Experienced hosts prep certain dishes in advance to have breathing room the day of.

Creating an Enchanting Atmosphere

Easter offers the perfect canvas for sophisticated décor that celebrates the season. Layer your table with fine linens, using a palette of soft spring hues accented with touches of gold or silver. Fresh flowers are essential, artfully arranged at varying heights down the table.

For brunch, embrace natural light and keep centerpieces low to encourage easy conversation. Evening gatherings benefit from the warm glow of candles and slightly more dramatic floral arrangements. Whatever you choose, ensure your décor enhances rather than overwhelms the dining experience.

A Memorable Menu

Let the menu reflect the season and your style. For brunch, I love elevating classic dishes with unexpected touches:

  • Starters: Deviled eggs with creative garnishes or a fruit platter drizzled with honey-lime dressing.

  • Mains: Quiche Lorraine, honey-glazed ham, or a savory asparagus tart.

  • Sides: Fresh green salads, roasted potatoes, or a yogurt parfait bar.

  • Desserts: Carrot cake cupcakes or lemon tarts adorned with edible flowers.

For dinner, consider these elegant yet approachable dishes:

  • Starters: Cream of asparagus soup with parmesan croutons.

  • Mains: Herb-crusted lamb, roasted chicken, or baked salmon.

  • Sides: Scalloped potatoes, sautéed green beans, or a spring risotto.

  • Desserts: Pavlova topped with fresh berries or decadent chocolate soufflés.

Pro Tip: Choose dishes that can be prepped in advance to make hosting easier.

The Beverage Experience

Create a refined beverage selection that complements your menu.

For Brunch:

  • Set up a Bloody Mary bar with classic and spicy tomato juices, vodka, celery, and olive garnishes.

  • Offer a Mimosa bar with sparkling wine and juices like orange, peach, and cranberry. Add fresh fruit for an extra splash.

  • Remember non-alcoholic options - sparkling water infused with cucumber and mint, a homemade elderflower spritzer, or a sparkling citrus lemonade.

For Dinner:

  • Pair your courses with complimentary wines—Sauvignon Blanc for starters, Pinot Noir for lamb, and a dessert wine. Always remember to have champagne stocked to make your event festive and celebratory.

Pro Tip: Greet guests with a signature cocktail with and without alcohol served on a polished tray.

Thoughtful Details

Small details are priceless and are appreciated. Put out name cards done in calligraphy or incorporate family heirlooms into your table setting to spark conversation.

For families with children, set up a separate table with age-appropriate activities and treats like decorating eggs or making bunny ears, or host an Easter egg hunt with fun prize categories like “Most Eggs Found” or “Golden Egg.”

Young guests will feel special while ensuring adult conversations can flow naturally.

For Adults:

  • Try a wine or cocktail tasting, complete with pairing notes. (Download The High Heeled Hostess Wine and Cheese Tasting Playbook)

  • Easter trivia or a name-the-flavor chocolate challenge adds a playful twist.

Pro Tip: Create a photo station with props like bunny ears, floral crowns, and a pastel backdrop to capture the day’s magic.

The Art of Hosting

The goal is always to make guests feel welcomed and at ease. Arrange seating to encourage conversation, prepare a subtle playlist of background music, and consider the flow of the event from arrival through the end of the event.

Your energy and demeanor set the tone. Take a moment to welcome guests and, when offered, graciously accept any offers of help. The goal is to cultivate an atmosphere where everyone—including you —can relax and enjoy the festivity.

Pro Tip: Assign simple tasks, like topping off drinks or clearing plates. Position trash and recycling bins in convenient spots to make cleanup effortless for everyone.

Lasting Impressions

Send guests home with a thoughtful reminder of the day - perhaps small arrangements from your table settings, elegantly wrapped homemade treats or potted spring bulbs or flower seed packets. Follow up with a gracious note expressing your appreciation for their company.

Remember, the most memorable gatherings balance refinement with warmth and careful planning with natural flow. By attending to these details, you'll create an Easter celebration that your guests will remember long after the last spring flower has faded.
